Sullivan was born in Toledo, Ohio and attended the University of Toledo where he worked on ''The Independent Collegian'' student newspaper.〔(Independent Collegian )〕 He also attended〔http://www.northwestern.edu/magazine/fall2006/cover/cover/sidebar3.html〕 Northwestern University for his Masters degree in New Media at the Medill School of Journalism and The Poynter Institute for a Visual Journalism Fellowship.
In 2010, he was awarded a fellowship〔http://businessjournalism.org/2010/07/15/new-reynolds-journalism-institute-fellows-include-entrepreneurs-journalists/〕 with the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri where he studied mobile and tablet news development.〔http://www.rjionline.org/fellows-program/sullivan/index.php〕 Also in 2010, he was elected the youngest ever member of the Online News Association board of directors.〔http://journalists.org/?page=boardofdirectors〕
